Kratom: What You Need to Know

Kratom is often marketed as a natural supplement for energy, pain relief, anxiety, or opioid withdrawal. However, “natural” does not mean safe.

Kratom contains compounds that act on the same receptors in the brain as opioids and can lead to dependence, addiction, and withdrawal symptoms. Regular use can cause tolerance, meaning higher amounts are needed over time to achieve the same effect. The FDA has warned that kratom may expose users to the risks of addiction, abuse, and dependence, and has raised concerns about highly concentrated kratom-derived products containing 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), which may have even greater abuse potential.

Common withdrawal symptoms may include:

  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Muscle aches and body pain
  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Sweating
  • Depression
  • Strong cravings for kratom

Research and clinical reports show that individuals who stop using kratom after regular use can experience significant withdrawal symptoms similar to those seen with opioids.

If you are using kratom and want to stop, you do not have to do it alone.
