Early Detection Matters, Breast Cancer Screening Event in Rolette

Northland Health Centers is joining the nationwide effort by encouraging community members to learn about their risk factors and take proactive steps to protect their breast health.

Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women. In North Dakota, approximately one in eight women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. While the exact cause of breast cancer is still unknown, several factors can increase a person’s likelihood of developing the disease. These include being a woman, being over age 50, having a family or personal history of breast cancer, inheriting certain genetic changes such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, receiving chest radiation before age 30, long‑term use of combined hormone replacement therapy, having dense breast tissue, being overweight after menopause, and consuming alcohol.

Despite these known risks, most individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors beyond age and gender. It is also important to recognize that breast cancer can occur in women under 50 and, though less common, in men as well.

While there is no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, lifestyle choices can help reduce risk. These include limiting alcohol use, quitting smoking or tobacco products, maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, eating a balanced diet, and discussing hormone therapy options with a healthcare provider.

One of the most effective tools for early detection is the mammogram. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is found early and is still localized, the five‑year relative survival rate is 99%. Northland Health Centers encourages individuals to talk with their healthcare provider about their personal risk factors and to determine when and how often they should receive a mammogram.

“In our rural communities, access to preventive care is essential. We want our patients to know that they don’t have to wait until something feels wrong to come see us. Regular screenings, conversations about family history, and simple lifestyle changes can make a real difference. We’re here to walk alongside our patients every step of the way,” said Melissa McClintock, FNP-C Northland Health Centers Chief Clinical & Operations Officer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a reminder that understanding your risk, making informed health choices, and staying up‑to‑date on recommended screenings can make a meaningful difference. Northland Health Centers remains committed to supporting the health and well‑being of the communities it serves.
