Northland expands treatment program with telehealth

Ray, ND — According to the North Dakota Department of Health & Human Services
Behavioral Health Data Book 2025, the state has 105 licensed substance use disorder
treatment programs as of October 10, 2024. In 2025, Northland Health Centers started a
substance use disorder program and most recently it has expanded to include in-person
telehealth services to patients in Ray, Minot, and Rolette, ND.

Katie Olerud, LAC leads with expanded telehealth options.

These in-person telehealth services will be led by Katie Olerud, LAC, a Licensed Addiction
Counselor dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by substance use.
Patients will need to visit a Northland Health Centers location for the telehealth
appointment to check-in with a nurse.

From there, Katie will be able to see patients virtually from the clinic while she provides
addiction and recovery services to patients in their hometown community. “Providing
telehealth addiction counseling allows me to meet people where they are and offer support
in a way that feels accessible and comfortable,” said Olerud. “My goal is to create a space
where individuals feel heard, respected, and empowered to take the next steps in their
recovery.”

Katie brings a strong clinical background and a person-centered, trauma-informed
approach to her work. She holds licensure as a Licensed Addiction Counselor and a DUI
Seminar Instructor Certificate, and earned her bachelor’s degree in Addiction Counseling
and Community Psychology from St. Cloud State University. She is currently pursuing a
master’s degree in Community Mental Health Counseling at the University of North Dakota.
Katie has been practicing since 2022 and has quickly become known for her
compassionate, evidence-based care.

Comprehensive addiction services expand.

Through telehealth, Katie will provide a full range of addiction counseling services,
including:
• Individual and group counseling
• Chemical dependency evaluations
• DUI seminars
• Treatment planning and recovery support

Her clinical approach incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing,
and solution-focused therapy, ensuring that each patient receives tailored,
research-supported care. Katie works with both adolescents and adults experiencing
substance use challenges, collaborating closely with interdisciplinary teams to promote
recovery, accountability, and long-term positive outcomes.

Telehealth expansion meets people where they’re at.

“Telehealth allows us to meet patients where they are—literally and emotionally,” said
Jennie Cornell, Behavioral Health Director at Northland Health Centers. “Katie’s expertise
and commitment to patient-centered care make her an invaluable resource for our rural
communities.”

Outside of her professional work, Katie enjoys reading, spending time with her son and dog,
visiting the lakes, traveling to Red Lodge, Montana, and exploring the outdoors on ATV
rides.

The outpatient clinic telehealth appointments with Katie Olerud, LAC, are now available.
